Tenpin Bowling

Tenpin Bowling has been involved with the Arafura Games Sporting Festival for 5 Games and the sports National Sporting Organisation, Tenpin Bowling Australia Limited views this festival as an important international tournament opportunity for our future national team representatives as well as a participation event for the local bowlers who are otherwise isolated from top class competition.  This is an opportunity for top class competition and friendly exchanges with other member federations of the Asian Bowling Federation.

Venue

Planet Bowl is the only bowling centre in Darwin, situated at 69 Progress Drive Nightcliff. The 16-lane centre is a bright welcoming venue for the staging of this event. The wooden lanes have Guardian on the heads and are maintained carefully in accordance with the NSOs lane conditioning policy. A Kegel Kustodian Plus Machine and an automatic computer score system ensure that the bowlers enjoy a call free event.

Events

The events featuring are both accredited with Tenpin Bowling Australia and sanctioned by the Asian Bowling Federation.

Arafura Games medals can be won in Open Male and Female Divisions in:

  • Singles
  • Doubles
  • Mixed Doubles
  • Trios
  • All Events
  • Masters

The first attempt in Singles, Doubles (first attempt if mixed doubles counts towards All Events) and Trios is free but multiple entries up to the maximum of 3 in each event will cost competitors $28 Aus per event.

Masters Finalists decided from the top 16 All Events Scores in all Divisions must pay $175 Aus entry for the final.

There will be cash prizes for the first 3 places in all Masters Divisions but the final amount is dependent on local sponsorship attained.

Australasian Youth Championships

For the first time the 2009 event will host an Australasian Youth Championships where bowlers under 23 years of age at January 1st 2009 can compete in teams of 3 or 6, bowling in singles, doubles, trios, all events and Youth Masters.  The first attempt in Singles, Doubles and Trios is free but multiple entries up to the maximum of 3 in each event will cost competitors $28 Aus per event.  If the youth bowlers wish to also compete in the Open Arafura Games then they will have to pay $28 per event after using their free entry in the Youth Championships.  Arafura Games Medals will be awarded for these events.

Youth Masters Finalists decided from the top 16 All Events Scores in all Divisions must pay $175 Aus entry for the final.  There will be cash prizes for the first 3 places in Masters Division but the final amount is dependent on local sponsorship attained.

There will be a Trophy awarded for the champion youth team from any country, state, territory or region determined by the number of top 3 placings in the Australasian Youth Championships.

Add on Cash Events

At the completion of the Medal Events bowlers may nominate to take part in the Arafura Classic Singles which will take place on the last weekend of the Games. This open event is staged every year.  Entry Fee is $300 AUD.

Format

Bowlers will qualify by bowling 10 games. The top 28 men and 20 women based on total scratch pinfall will compete in Round 2 and bowl a further 6 games.The highest qualifier in both male and female divisions after round two will receive $300. On completion of Round 2, the highest placed 16 men and 16 women will bowl 15 games match play. Match Play - Bonus pinfall will apply during the match play with 20 pins for a win and 10 pins for a draw. Pinfall will carry over from Round 2 into Match play.

Final

The top 16 men and women will play 15 games of match play together. On completion of match play the top 3 men and 3 women will compete in a one (1) game stepladder final. All pinfall is now dropped. Highest placed male and female players based on final positions after the match play, will automatically proceed to the grand final. Positions 3 will play 2 and the winner will proceed to the grand final where the two finalists will play a one game final. Should the winner after match play be defeated they can call for an additional repercharge game. Bonus pinfall will not apply during the stepladder final.

The tournament carries in excess of $10,000 guaranteed prizefund.

Interesting Sport Facts

The Sport
  • There are approximately 165 Bowling Centres in Australia.
  • Bowling requires mental and physical precision and stamina to compete at an elite level
  • The two essential motor skills for the bowler are balance and co-ordination
  • The game of tenpin bowling in Australia commenced at the Washington Bowling Saloon in Ballarat, Victoria in 1885, with the first fully automatic centre opening in Hurstville, Sydney in 1960.
  • The first perfect game was bowled at Northern Bowl, Corrimal NSW in March 1963 by Joe Velo.  This game was the first perfect game in fact to be bowled outside of the United States.
  • The youngest Australian ever to bowl a perfect game was Bradley Hatfield of Alice Springs.  He bowled his 300 game at the Dustbowl in Alice Springs on 30 July, 1994 at the age of 13 years and 10 months.
  • Australia has had World Cup Winners in Jeanette Baker in 1982 and 1983, Cara Honeychurch in 1996, Maxine Nable in 1998, Amanda Bradley in 1999 and Ann Maree Putney in 2007.
  • A regulation bowling pin weighs between 3lb 6ozs and 3lb 10oz and this means that the total weight of all pins in use across Australia at any one time would be over 200,000 lb or 90,700kg.
The Sport in the Northern Territory
  • Planet Tenpin opened in Darwin during 1978 and Alice Springs during 1979.
  • Life members of the Sport in the NT include June Voukolos, Debbie Halprin and Jim Polkinghorne (Alice Springs).
  • 300 Games bowled in Arafura Games in Darwin include Maxine Nable, Paul Longayroux, Jamie Sim (Australia) and Jonathan Lim (Malaysia) - Jonathans was his first sanctioned 300.
  • Tenpin has been part of the Northern Territory Institute of Sport since it opened its doors and is the only Institute Program in Australia for tenpin bowling.
  • Territory bowlers George Voukolos, Debbie Halprin, Lillian Petersen, Ronald Voukolos, Bruno Maglieri and Kaye Talbot have all bowled over 200 games for the Northern Territory in the Walter Rachuig Competition, Ronald being the youngest bowler in Australia to do so (28 years of age).
  • Ronald Voukolos is one of 5 bowlers in Australia who have bowled a 300 game in the Walter Rachuig Competition since the competition began in the 60s.
  • Territorian's Karen Yow, Ronald Voukolos, Dane Cuthbert, Michelle Halprin, Andrew McArthur, Jayde Flanagan and Bec Simpson, have all represented Australia in either Youth or Adult National Teams since 1981.
  • Andrew McArthur was the first Territorian to win the Australian Masters title
  • Karen Yow was the first Territorian to win the Junior Australian Masters title
  • June Voukolos and Debbie Halprin have represented Australia as National Team Coaches.
  • June Voukolos was the first Administrator for the Sport in the Northern Territory and became the first woman Chairperson of the sports governing body Tenpin Bowling Australia Limited serving in that role for 5 years.
